Lace
A delicate openwork fabric hand- or machine-made by looping, interlacing or knitting thread in a decorative web-like pattern.
 
 
Lambskin
A soft leather made from the skin of a young sheep.
 
 
Lambswool
A soft, resilient wool yarn gathered from the first shearing of a sheep before it is eight months old to ensure the best quality.
 
 
Lamé
A fabric woven or knit with metallic threads that form either a solid or a decorative pattern.
 
 
Lawn
A sheer and lightweight combed cotton fabric designed in a plain weave with either a soft or starched finish.
 
 
Layette
A collection of essential pieces of clothing, bedding and accessories for a newborn child.
 
 
Linen
Made from the fibers of the flax plant, a fabric that is stronger, cooler and more absorbent than cotton.
 
 
Lining
An extra layer of fabric at the interior of a garment to retain shape, prevent clinging or provide warmth.
 
 
Liquid cotton
A luxurious cotton jersey designed with an ultra-smooth and slinky finish.
 
 
Lisle
A smooth jersey-like cotton fabric made from long-staple yarns that have been combed and twisted to remove all fuzz and fiber ends.
 
 
Lochrosen crystal
A type of Swarovski crystal that has a hole in the center of the bead for easy sewing onto a garment.
 
 
Loft
A term used to describe the thickness of a yarn or fabric and its ability to bounce back after being compressed.
 
 
Loom
An apparatus used to weave thread or yarn into cloth.
 
 
Lug sole
A rubber sole designed with deep indentations for maximum traction and stability.
 
 
Lurex®
A tarnish-proof metallic fiber invented in the 1940s and trademarked by Dow Badische Company.
 
 
Lycra®
A brand-name spandex stretch fiber trademarked by DuPont in 1958.
