Fall 2013

Women have been experimenting with men’s styles since the days of the Grecian toga. This fall, Ralph Lauren continues the trend by mixing Blue Label’s haberdashery-inspired pieces with decidedly girlish accents. The sharp shoulders, notched lapels and tweedy texture of this season’s essential sport jacket all recall Savile Row tailoring, but the piece is cut for a woman’s figure and features a nipped-in waist and a dramatic collar. The key to pulling off the English gentleman look, as actresses Marlene Dietrich and Bianca Jagger and other menswear-loving women knew well, is to add ladylike layers that soften the edges of your blazer or waistcoat. A ruffled tartan shirt and a shearling or cashmere scarf pair perfectly with a professorial herringbone hacking jacket and jeweled earrings, culminating in a glamorous, nightlife-friendly look. It’s a strong contrast that Dietrich and Jagger surely would approve of. The result is boyish, yes, yet perfectly suited to today’s woman.
