Summer 2014

The season’s traditional sporting events, like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, are the perfect places to break out Ivy League–inspired essentials crafted from summer-weight fabrics in light, fresh colors. Whether you’ll be sitting courtside, standing by the fairway or waiting things out at the clubhouse, there are several basic pieces that will ensure you’re prepped at all times. You can’t go wrong with a crisp white polo shirt. Dress it up with a navy blazer, or wear it with a white denim pant for a monochromatic look. A cable-knit cashmere sweater is another versatile classic and will come in handy on breezy days, when an additional layer is necessary. Try one in a seasonal hue, such as bright green, for added panache. Because of linen’s breathability, apparel made from the fabric—shirts, pants and even sport coats—will keep you cool in hot weather. Complete your look with a pair of aptly named spectator shoes or drivers. Comfort is key to sporting style—you never know when a match might run longer than expected.
