Nothing makes a genteel statement
better than a sharp, perfectly
tailored suit.
A casual evening at home is no excuse
for sloppiness. An ever-present pocket
square dresses up a deconstructed
blazer, and an artfully arranged scarf
keeps evening chills at bay.
A crisp shirt made from a lightweight,
spring-ready fabric is as fundamental
to preppy, Gatsbyesque dressing as
the way you wear it.

“I’ve never seen such beautiful shirts before,” Daisy Buchanan exclaims to Jay Gatsby in a pivotal scene from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic. Gatsby’s extensive collection of luxurious shirts is merely one aspect of his iconic, gentlemanly style, which is defined by refined sportswear and elegant tailoring. For a refresher on Gatsby-era garb, here we take a look at how actor Robert Redford brought some of the character’s best looks to life in the 1974 version of the film. You can replicate the ensembles for yourself, too. All you need to do is take preppy, classic basics and put them together to create a look that exudes polish from head to toe. As for finding your own equally well-dressed heroine, that’s up to you.
